PRODUCT STORY
John Kemp Starley created the ‘Rover Safety Bicycle‘ in 1885, upending the teetering “Penny Farthing” by crafting a bike with two same-sized wheels, chain drive, and a steerable front fork. Thousands pedaled their variants on the design that is today‘s standard, but brothers Edmund and Harry Crane crushed the competition when they founded the Hercules Cycle and Motor Co. in 1910.
The Cranes were on it with sponsorship deals, too. Eileen Sheridan rode a Hercules machine, setting endurance records that would have winded her bike’s Olympian inspirator. Her record of 1000 miles in 3 days, 1 hour wasn’t broken for 48 years.
Hercules made very cool bikes, including the 1950’s Royal Prince marque adorning this shirt, until their ho-hum fade into the miasma of the TI Group holding company.
Eileen Sheridan, meanwhile, cranks on, still riding at 97 years old!
